Gili Trawangan is a small island which is secluded from Lombok Island. Administratively the island is part of North Lombok Regency. To get there you can cross from Lombok through the Bangsal Port in North Lombok Regency. The travel time is approximately 25 minutes using a small boat with maximum capacity of 40 people. Boats from Bangsal Harbor to Gili Trawangan (and vice versa) operate from around 8 am to 4.30 in the afternoon.
Gili Trawangan is known as an anti-motorized vehicles island. On this island you will not find car or motor bike at all. There are only bicycles and “cidomos” (a type of horse cart). The surrounding waters are known as snorkeling spots in the Lombok region.
There is also a term regarding to this island called the Three Gilis. This term is used to refer to three small islands which are the Gili Meno, the Gili Air and Gili Trawangan itself. The snorkeling operators there generally offer two types of packages, using private boats and public boats. If your budget is enough and you want to enjoy more personalized service, you can choose a private boat package with more expensive price. While public boat is a wise choice if your budget is low. The public boat contains around 20-25 people.
Snorkeling operators generally open two schedules, which are 10.30 in the morning and 1 pm with a duration of about 4 hours. Usually you will be taken to three best snorkeling spots.
The main road of Gili Trawangan is near to the beach. This road is usually crowded with tourists who passing by doing various activities. Along this road there are many bars and restaurants which is similar to Legian and surrounding areas in Bali.
Don’t be surprised if you find many tourists and locals passing by “ontel” bicycles on this road. If you want, you can also do the same, cycling around the Gili Trawangan. On the island there are lots of bicycle rentals with prices ranged from IDR50.000 per 24 hours.
If you can’t ride a bicycle or simply want to enjoy the atmosphere on foot, it’s okay! Gili Trawangan is also a cool place to walk. The atmosphere you will get is not much different from riding a bicycle or “cidomo”. The best part is that you can be more free to enjoy every detail you meet while walking.
4. Night Culinary
Visiting Gili Trawangan will be perfect and more enjoyable if you spend the night there. The island is quite famous for its lively nightlife. You can enjoy the night atmosphere in bars or cafes lined up along the road. Gili Trawangan is very different from Bali where you can find easily menus with pork based ingredients. The majority of the menus on Gili Trawangan are made from seafood and vegetables.
On the island there is a night market that will open around 7 pm. You can choose various kinds of culinary by yourself. Local and foreign tourists will spill here at night.
5. Watching Movie Near The Beach
If you come with your partner, it might be a good idea to spend the night watching a movie. But in Gili Trawangan the cinema is totally different from the movie theater opened at the mall. To enjoy the sunset you have to walk around the island. There is a perfect spot known as Ombak Sunset but you need to go quite far to reach it. 9. Enjoying The Sunrise
Unlike the sunset, to enjoy the sunrise on Gili Trawangan you don’t have to walk too far. You just have to walk to the main road around 6 am and voila, the sunrise will appear from behind the hill. Four your information, the sun on Gili Trawangan will only be seen around 6 in the morning. This is because the sunlight is blocked by a row of hills. The morning atmosphere on Gili Trawangan itself looks deserted. It will “come back to life” around 8 am.
