Bali Special Days & Events 2020

This schedule days are all traditional events, Hindu ceremonies, tourism calendar of events that held only in Bali Island on 2020. These events consist of Hindus ceremony events and government events as well. Here are the list:

 

 

JANUARY

 

January 23rd, 2020: Hari Raya Siwa Ratri (Siva Gods Day).

This is special days for Balinese Hindu to thanks Gods on His form as Siva God (God who believed as the destroyer and recycle all unusefull things in the worlds). Normally, Balinese Hindu will pray every six hours in certain temple, starting in the evening (at 18.00) mostly the Balinese Hindu will stay up until the next day. For youngster, most of them will drive busy all the night to visit many places either temples or some other public places. While for spiritual community they fasting for 24 hours from 06.00 am to 06.00 am in the next day. It is believe as one of the most spiritual days.

 

January 25th, 2020: Tumpek Wariga Day (Tumpek Uduh/Tumpek Pengatag).

This is a special day for Balinese Hindu to respect, tree, forest, plantation fruits, flower and all about vegetal & green environtment. In this day, Balinese Hindu will make some simple offering namely Bubur Sumsum (Mush rice with coconut sugar), the God manifestation for plantation know as the SANGKARA GOD. The philosophy can be taken by visitors. How Balinese people very care with their environment by protecting rare plant, by provided some offering and believe there always a spirit inside all the plants, (we can sustainable concept has been adapted in simple way). The local sustainable life concept called Tri Hita Karana to create the balance between human, God and its environment.

 

January 20th, 2020: Public temple ceremony (Pura Gelap/Gelap Temple).

This temple is located on slope of Mount Agung, around 1 km upper Besakih Temple. Gelap Temple is a place to worship God in his manifestation as Bhatara Iswara (Iswara God), the protector of the eastern universe or the Bhuwana Agung. The term “gelap” in the name of the Gelap Temple is not derived from the Indonesian language. The word “gelap” originates from the Kawi language which means the lightning with its dazzling white light.

 

January 22th, 2020: Jati Temple (Public Temple Ceremony).

This temple is located of the foot of Mount Batur near the start point of Batur climbing. Jati Temple is a place to worship Ida Sang Hyang Widi Wasa (God) in his manifestation as Bhatara Hyang Gangga (Hyang Gangga God).

 

January 25th, 2020: Puseh Temple in Batuan Village (Public Temple Ceremony). 

This village temple has one of the best architecture in Bali, located in Batuan Village around 15 minutes from Ubud. Puseh Batuan Temple is one of the oldest temples in Bali. The initial construction of the Puseh Temple was the beginning of Hindu civilization history in Bali. No wonder if in this temple you will find various kinds of historical relics in prehistoric times such as statues, phallus and many others.

 

 

FEBRUARY

 

February 18th, 2020: Penampahan Galungan Day (Slaugther & Sacrifices Day).

This is one day before Galungan, where the Balinese Hindu will finish their preparation offering for Galungan Day. The main activities will be slaughter many pig (pork) and some small number of chickens and ducks, the philosophy for this pig slaughter, as the symbol to drive away the evils character inside our soul (same like Pig, that are lazy, fat, greedy) so that people can have pure mind during the Galungan Day, in next day.

 

February 19th, 2020: Galungan Day (Victory of Dharma against Adharma).

This day is the symbol of the victory for Dharma (Gods Power) against Adharma (Evils power), for Balinese Hindu this is the peak of the all days for around 210 days before & after (same as 6 months on Balinese Calendar). Almost all the people are praying to some temples (such as family temple, village temple and public temple).

 

February 20th, 2020: Umanis Galungan (The first day after Galungan)

Umanis Galungan normally used by local for holiday visit Balinese to visit one each others, such as friends, family and neighbor and also for recreation moment.

 

February 29th, 2020: Kuningan Day

Just ten days after Galungan Day, this ceremony dedicated to the Gods and Godesses in all manifestation, as the holylight of the Supreme God. All the ceremony must held and finish before 12.00 (noon).

 

February 29th, 2020: Mekotekan Munggu Village (Tourist Attraction)

On this day, the villagers of Munggu in Mengwi hold the Mekotek ritual. Known as ‘spear fight’, the ritual started in 1934 in the village of Munggu and real spears were used at the time unlike the blunt-ended wooden sticks that are used at present. The Mekotek sees two groups of male villagers as opponents attempting to force down the opposition cone of sticks which usually results in people being crushed below the collapsed cone of sticks.

 

February 29th, 2020: Taman Pule Temple in Mas Village (Public Temple Ceremony)

There is always big ceremony in this temple on Kuningan Days, and it will be held 4 days until it next Tuesday. Thousand of Balinese will come to this temple to pray. There is also temporary night market in front of this temple that can be interesting to visit in the evening as well as to see daily dance performance in the hall of the temple.

 

February 29th, 2020: Sakenan Temple in Serangan Island (Public Temple Ceremony)

This is one of the most historical temple from the period of King Sri Kesari Warmadewa (Serangan Island, 20 minutes from of Balinese Kingdom during 10th century, the ceremony held for around 3 days Kuta, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua and Sanur) when thousand of Balinese come to pray.

 

 

MARCH

 

March 21st – 23rd, 2020: Melasty Days Period (Purification day for Sacred Symbol)

In this round three days period, all Balinese people will do a purification ceremony the purification mainly dedicated to all sacred symbol of the Gods & Goddesses that usually keep in village temple such as sacred Barong, Rangda
Holy sculpture, holy weapons. This ceremony will held in all Beaches and lake all over Bali, starting from early morning (05.00 am) to 11.00 am. For visitor, this ceremony will be very interesting to see thousand of Balinese Hindu come to the beach and they can see many form of Balinese sacred symbol.

 

March 24th, 2020: Pengrupukan Day (Day to welcoming the New Year)

This special day to greet Balinese Hindu New year. The celebration will be held by doing a parade around the village starting between 16.00 to 20.00 when the local people will parade Ogoh-Ogoh, Balinese giant sculpture with various forms/faces, followed by fire torch and Balinese gamelan instrument in strong rhythm. The philosophy of this parade, to drive away all the evils power, so that the Nyepi days can running smoothly. Also there will be a simple fireworks and traditional firecrackers turn on. For visitor, it will be interesting to see the Ogoh-ogoh parade. It can be find everywhere in Bali.

 

March 25th, 2020: Nyepi (Silent Day)

Balinese Hindu New Year, especially in Bali Island, all the activities will be closed. No airport, no harbour, no road, no machine activities, school will be on holiday, no local TV, no local radio, no public facilities operated. All population in Bali must stay in their home, as well as the visitor must at home stay in their hotel for 24 hours, starting from March 25th at 06.00 am to 06.00 am in the next day (March, 25th). Limited access transportation allowed only for emergency situation such as: the ambulance for sick people or fire brigade. There are four main philosophy for NYEPI DAYS namely the “Catur Brata Penyepian” which are: Amati Geni (No fire), Amati Karya (No work/No activities), Amati Lelungan (Don’t go anywhere) and Amati Lelanguan (No entertainment). For spiritually people, they will do some meditation, yoga, 24 hours fasting, etc. Another island in Indonesia also on holiday, but their daily activities running normally. For visitor: They will feel a full 24 hours fresh air, calm and no pollution, no machine and very relax also limited light in the night.

 

March 26th, 2020: Ngembak Geni Day (The first day after Nyepi).

This day, normally used by local Balinese Hindu to visit one each other, such as friends, family, neighbors. This time also time for relax and visit temple or just leisure.

 

March 26th, 2020: Omed-omedan Attraction (Tourist Attraction)

This special attraction held just one day after the Nyepi Day at Sesetan Village Denpasar, around 20 minutes from Sanur/Kuta. This is an unique old tradition because it is only held at Sesetan Village. The participant is young boys & young girl (Age between 17 – 30 years old) and not married yet. The attraction is when one woman & boy pull each other and the boy must try to kiss the lady and it is repeated by all participant. If the boy is fail to kiss the lady, he will be flushed by water, by others participant.

 

March 29th – April 5th, 2020: Bali Spirit Festival (Tourist Attraction)

The week-long festival takes many forms, from yoga, meditation, dance, martial arts and healing workshops and seminars, to full-day fairs and markets selling handicrafts, vegan food, clothing and gifts. A huge line up of world and spiritual music will hit both daytime and night concerts. The venue is at Bali Purnati Foundation, Jalan Gunung Abang, Banjar Penataran, Desa Batuan, Sukawati. The week Desa Batuan – Sukawati long festival takes many forms, from yoga, meditation, dance, martial arts and healing workshops and seminars to full-day fairs and markets selling handicrafts, vegan food and clothing gifts. A huge line up of world and spiritual music will hit both daytime and night concerts, and find their schedules, line-ups, special events and more information on their website.

 

March 4th, 2020: Tanah Lot Temple (Public Temple Ceremony)

Tanah lot is public temple among 9 directions of Bali and believe as the place of Rudra God, this temple famous for its fantastic sunset view. Pura Tanah Lot Bali is located on the edge of the Tanah Lot Beach and stands on a sturdy and strong sea rock. Tanah Lot comes from the word “Tanah” which means land and “Lot” (Lod) which means sea. Because it is located on the sea and looks like floating when high tides, the people then interpreted Tanah Lot as Land or Island located in the sea, therefore people also call it Tanah Lot.

 

March 9th, 2020: Penataran Sasih Temple (Public Temple Ceremony)

Penataran Sasih Temple is located at Pejeng Village (20 minutes east part of Ubud). It is historical temple with its famous collection called ” the moon of Pejeng”; that are basically an archaeology of bronze Nekara. Penataran Sasih Temple is also one of Bali’s cultural heritages. This temple is unique because inside the temple there is a big bronze Nekara, with a length of 186.5 cm and is referred to as the “Pejeng Moon”. The function of Nekara is believed as ritual medium to ask for rain carried out by local residents.

 

March 10th, 2020: Uluwatu Temple (Public Temple Ceremony)

Uluwatu Temple is located at southpart of Bali with its historical story mention it was built by Famous Hindu Priest Mpu Kuturan. The temple is one of six key temples believed to be Bali’s spiritual pillars. Uluwatu Temple occupies land on a high cliff that bulge into the Indonesian Ocean with a height of about 70 m above sea level.

 

March 10th, 2020: Andakasa Temple (Public Temple Ceremony)

This temple is dedicated as the place of Brahma God in his manifestation as the “creator”. It is located at Karangasem Regency. The name of the Andakasa Temple is taken from the concept of Andabhuwana (Egg of Universe). This concept illustrates the scientific understanding of Balinese elders that the earth is round like an egg.

 

March 10th, 2020: Goa Lawah Temple (Public Temple Ceremony)

Goa Lawah Temple (Bat Cave Temple) is located at Klungkung Regency just beside the fishing village of Kusamba and Padang Bay Harbor. The temple is one of six key temples believed to be Bali’s spiritual pillars. Goa Lawah (Balinese Language) means Bat Cave because in the temple area there is a cave filled with bats. This temple is also used as a place for Nyegara Gunung/Nyekah ceremonies which the aim is to deliver the spirits of Balinese people who has been cremated to become Pitara God (Ancestor).

 

March 10th, 2020: Taman Ayun Temple Mengwi (Public Temple Ceremony)

This temple previously belong to Royal Family of Mengwi Kingdom, before it is declare as public temple, this temple is beautifully surrounded by handmade lake. Taman Ayun Bali Temple is often referred to as one of the most beautiful temples in Bali. Besides having an amazing architectural design, this temple also has magical elements and high artistic value.

 

March 10th, 2020: Pusering Jagat Temple (Public Temple Ceremony)

This temple is located at Pejeng Village close to Penataran Sasih Temple, only 20 minutes from Ubud. Local residents believe that Pura Pusering Jagat is the beginning of life and world civilization. That belief is most likely true because Pusering Jagat indeed means the center of the universe. Pura Pusering Jagat is indeed an important temple in Bali. Pusering Jagat is one of six key temples believed to be Bali’s spiritual pillars which is located in the center of Bali Island. In Hindu cosmology, the center is the residence of Lord Shiva.

 

March 11th, 2020: Perancak Temple Jembrana (Public Temple Ceremony)

Historical temple at west part of Bali, believe as one stop point of famous priest from Java, Dang Hyang Nirartha. This temple commemorates the site of Dang Hyang Nirartha‘s arrival in Bali in 1546. It is also one of the most sacred temples in Bali. 

 

 

APRIL

 

April 4th, 2020: Tumpek Krulut

This special holy days dedicated to the God, on his authority to control all the sound, voice, tone in the cosmos. In Bali the offering & ceremony normally held to Gamelan & Gong (Balinese music instruments).

 

April 17th – 19th, 2020: Ubud Food Festival

Take place at Sanggingan Village, next to Indus Restaurant. The Ubud Food Festival is one of the leading food festivals in Indonesia and will present more than 100 speakers, ranging from cooks or chefs, food recipe book writers, culinary experts, gastronomic activists, as well as national and international culinary practitioners.

 

April 7th, 2020: Besakih Mother Temple (Public Temple Ceremony)

Special ceremony called “Bhatara Turun Kabeh” it is meant the biggest ceremony held in year because there is many ceremony in the area of Besakih Temple that held almost every week. It is a ceremony that depicts all God manifestations which gathered at Pura Besakih and united to give grace to His people. The Batara Turun Kabeh ceremony is held every year.

 

April 7th, 2020: Lempuyang Madya Temple (Public Temple Ceremony)

This temple located on the slopes of Lempuyang Hill. You need to take some small climbing to reach this temple. It can be combined with a visit to the Gate of Heaven to take famous picture but bit touristic. For Hindus and tourists who want to Tangkil (come to pray) to this temple, one thing that is worth preparing is physical endurance because you have to pass thousands of steps and of course a sincere pure heart.

 

April 8th, 2020: Petitenget Temple (Public Temple Ceremony)

Located at beach Petitenget Kerobokan, a famous tourist side.

 

April 14th, 2020: Puncak Payogan Temple (Public Temple Ceremony)

Located at Ubud Village of Lungsiakan, only 5 minutes from central Ubud.

 

 

MAY

 

May 9th, 2020: Tumpek Kandang (Tumpek Uye)

This special days dedicated to the God on His authority to control all the animals, pets and livestocks. The ceremony & offering will be held in the cage of the animals. This ceremony is dedicated to Siwa God on his manifestation as shepherd called “Rare Angon”.

 

May 7th, 2020: Pojok Batu Temple in Tejakula Village (Public Temple Ceremony)

This temple located at Tejakula Village, north east part of Bali around 25 minutes from Amed/Tulamben. This temple beautifully set near the beach.

 

May 7th, 2020: Samuan Tiga Temple in Bedulu Village (Public Temple Ceremony)

This temple is located 15 minutes eastern part of Ubud. This is temple has historic story as the place of three party meeting (King, Priest and People) to solve and create peace from the war among the nine Hindu sects.

 

May 19th, 2020: Tirta Sudamala Temple in Bangli (Public Temple Ceremony)

This temple is waterspring temple that believe as one of the most sacred places for
purification.

 

May 20th, 2020: Rambut Siwi Temple in Jembrana (Public Temple Ceremony)

Located at southwest part of Bali, this temple is on the main way between Denpasar and Gilimanuk. It has strong historical story about high priest Bali “Rsi Wawu Rauh”.

 

May 20th, 2020: Batubolong Temple in Canggu (Public Temple Ceremony)
This temple located near the famous beach of Canggu and Seminyak night life.

 

 

JUNE

 

June 3rd, 2020: Gunung Raung Temple in Taro (Public Temple Ceremony)

This temple very famous located at north part of Ubud, near the Elephant Park at Taro Village, Tegalalang.

 

June 11th – 12th, 2020: Perang Pandan in Tenganan Village (Pandan Leaf War)

Special traditional event that held at Tenganan Traditional Village, located at Karangasem Regency (east Bali). Here the local young boys will fight each other using weapons that made from Pandan leaf fully with thorn. This is an old tradition that very sacred, held as the symbol for the young generation to be ready on become village army to protect from their enemy in the former time. This Pandan War normally will be held for three days.

 

June 13th – July 12th, 2020: Pesta Kesenian Bali in Denpasar (Bali Art Festival)

This is an annual event held by the Bali Goverment for around one month, located at Art Centre Hall in Denpasar. This festival will be open at June 13th, at Renon Denpasar with great parade from all participants from nine regent in Bali and participants from other part of Indonesia as well as from other countries. The rest of the event will be held at Art Center Hall, with many tourist attractions such as work shop, art exhibition, daily art performance (in the evening). For Visitor: This event is very interesting to see. However some negative side is there will be many of merchants & business shops. But for opening parade on June 13th will be very great experience.

 

June 13th, 2020: Tumpek Wayang (Puppets Day)

This is special day dedicated to the art, especially wayang (puppet) in other that always bring good luck. The offering dedicated to Hyang Iswara, manifestation God that are concern on art and creativity. Normally there will be simple ceremony held in the house of all Master of Puppets. In some temple also will held puppets performance.

 

June 17th, 2020: Rambut Sedana Ceremony (Ceremony for Finance & Treasure)

Special ceremony dedicated to Ida Ratu Rambu Sedana, the God of wealth prosperity, purity, generosity. It is also believe to be good day to give some donations or other philanthropy activities.

 

June 3rd, 2020: Gunung Raung Temple in Taro Village (Public Temple Ceremony)

This temple is very famous located at north part of Ubud near the Elephant Park at Taro Village Tegalalang.

 

 

JULY

 

July 4th, 2020: Saraswati Day

This day is a holy days dedicated to Saraswati God, as the Gods of Knowldge and the God of Wisdom. In this day all the schools & university students, teachers as well as traditional healers will held special ceremony to respect the Saraswati God.

 

July 5th, 2020: Banyu Pinaruh Day (Purification day for Human)

Just one day after Saraswati Day is special day for Balinese people to purify them self by taking shower, shampoo & praying on the beaches, lakes and holy water springs. In the family house, people normally made special offering called Nasi Kuning (yellow rice), with fried egg, chicken, bean and fried coconut.

 

July 8th, 2020: Pagerwesi Day

Pagerwesi day is a special day for worship dedicated to ancestor spirit, Supreme God. This day also special day when the people must try control them self such as control their emotion, control their mind, their words, the acts always on positive side.

 

July 12th, 2020: Mekepung Race (Tourist Attraction)

Makepung is one of the unique traditions stemmed from the agrarian life scene of the island and is a widely enjoyed event in the regency of Jembrana, West Bali. The widely known race of water buffaloes is a colorful spectacle and the racing course is about 2 kilometers. Here, the farmers and their buffaloes come to race for honor, pride and the trophy, rather than for money.

 

July 18th, 2020: Tumpek Landep Day

This is special days for Balinese Hindu to thanks Gods on His form as the Gods of Metal, Iron, Steel, Copper (Namely: HYANG PASUPATI). All the goods that made from the above materials, such as Car, Motorcycle
Knife, Sword, Keris, etc, will be provided some offerings and decorated by young coconut leaf, as the symbol of our thanks and respect to the Gods.

 

July 8th, 2020: Kehen Temple Bangli (Public Temple Ceremony)

Kehen Temple is one of the most famous temple, with its complete and beautiful structure.

 

July 22th, 2020: Pura Besukihan in area of Besakih Temple (Public Temple Ceremony)

This temple is located closed to Mother Temple of Besakih.

 

 

AUGUST

 

August 14th – 15th, 2020: Ubud Village Jazz Festival

After 6 successful years, the Ubud Village Jazz Festival (UVJF) returns again this year carrying the theme “Freedom of Expression”, welcoming many legendary figures from the Indonesian archipelago and abroad, who will come to perform and share their most recent arrangements with the public at Arma Museum Garden.

 

August 21st – 25th, 2020: Sanur Village Festival

Special festival held by Sanur Village Community, that mostly about art, workshop, performance held in Sanur.

Located at Pejeng Village around 20 minutes eastern part of Ubud.

 

August 17th, 2020: Gelap Temple at Besakih (Public Temple Ceremony)

This temple is located on slope of Mount Agung around 1 km upper Besakih Temple.

 

August 19th, 2020: Jati Temple (Public Temple Ceremony)

This is one of the temple located near the mother temple of Besakih. The visit here can be combine with Besakih Temple.

 

September 2nd, 2020: Gunung Kawi Temple at Tampak Siring (Public Temple Ceremony)

Famous as one archaeology site from the period of Balinese Kingdom, when the King was the Anak Wungsu.

This famous water spring temple located at Tampak siring village just near the Indonesian President Palace.

 

October 1st, 2020: Pulaki Temple (Public Temple Ceremony)

This temple located at northwest part of Bali, near the village of Pemuteran and West Bali National Park
this temple is occupied by hundreds of monkeys.

 

October 1st, 2020: Padma Tiga Tiga Temple at Besakih (Public Temple Ceremony)

This temple is located at central part of Besakih Temple, consist of three shrines (Padma) as the symbol of Brahma, Wisnu & Siwa Gods.
