Sano Nggoang Lake Flores, The Deepest Volcanic Lake

Located in the interior of Flores Island, Sano Nggoang Lake lures visitors with its mesmerizing natural beauty. Surrounded by towering green mountains, the lake is an ideal place to escape the hustle and bustle of urban life.

Sano Nggoang Lake Location and Access

Lake Sano Nggoang Flores is a volcanic lake whose location is actually quite “strategic”. This is because the lake is located not far from the tourist attractions of Cunca Rami and Cunca Wulang waterfalls, as well as the popular Komodo National Park.

However, you can only visit this volcanic lake from Labuan Bajo with a fairly challenging terrain. For this reason, it seems that the name Sano Nggoang is not as popular as the names of other NTT tourist destinations that have already been famous.

Although the duration of the trip from Labuan Bajo City to Sano Nggoang Lake actually only takes about 3-4 hours, the high level of difficulty of the terrain is a challenge in itself. Fortunately, currently the transportation route from Labuan Bajo to Sano Nggoang is in the process of development to make it better and more comfortable for tourists to pass.

The panoramic beauty that stretches along the way is ready to make your trip far from boring or tiring. The beautiful environment, combined with the rows of traditional houses of the typical Manggarai community, combine into a view that will spoil your eyes.

Sano Nggoang name is taken from the Kempo ethnic language. Sano means lake or swamp, while Nggoang means lit or glowing. So, Sano Nggoang according to the local language can be interpreted as a lake that lights up or glows.

Lake Sano Nggoang is located about 63 kilometers or 3 hours drive from Labuan Bajo – a small port city on the western tip of Flores Island and the capital of West Manggarai Regency. Labuan Bajo can be accessed via airplane from Bali. After that, from Labuan Bajo via the Transflores route, the journey continues to Nunang village, the entrance to Sano Nggoang Lake.

The Charm of Sano Nggoang Lake

Sano Nggoang Lake is the largest crater lake in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, with an area of about 5,500 hectares. It is considered one of the deepest lakes in the world with a depth of about 600 meters. Along the shores of Lake Sano Nggoang there are several villages where local people live. These small farming villages are home to only about 250 residents who live in traditional woven bamboo houses or newer modern houses of wood or brick, each with their own garden. The villages are bordered by lakes, plantations and hills. The remote location and small size of the villages provide visitors with a quiet retreat from the hustle and bustle of Labuan Bajo tourism.

Sano Nggoang Lake is located at an altitude of 750 meters above sea level. This lake is the main attraction because it has a relatively high sulfur content. A sharp smell of sulfur will be smelled around the lake area. Therefore, bathing for skin health is one of the main purposes of visiting this lake. For bathing, there is a hot spring at one end of the lake. Apart from bathing, there are many activities that can be carried out here, including recreational horse riding around the lake, bird watching, trekking and photography.

Of the various activities that we can do, enjoying the scenery is an interesting thing to do especially because the nature and forest around the lake are still very natural and beautiful. To get around the lake, you can ride a horse or go trekking while enjoying the view of the lake from a higher place.

Sano Nggoang Lake has a very beautiful landscape including forests, hills, lakes and flora and fauna around the lake. All of these become interesting photography objects to preserve. The sunset also looks beautiful in this region, making it interesting to capture with your camera. Besides being beautiful and serene, Sano Nggoang Lake is also a habitat for several species of birds.
