The Famous Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park

Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park is a National Park located in East Java, Indonesia, which is situated in the administrative area of Pasuruan Regency, Malang Regency, Lumajang Regency and Probolinggo Regency. The national park was inaugurated in 1982 with an area of approximately 50,276.3 ha.

Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) is one of the main tourist destinations in East Java. In addition to Mount Bromo which is the main attraction, Mount Semeru which is the highest mountain on the island of Java is also a special attraction for climbers. However, getting to the top of Semeru is not as easy as climbing Mount Bromo and climbers are required to obtain permission from the national park management office in Malang.

TNBTS is the only conservation area in Indonesia that has a 10km sea of sand called Tengger, where four new volcanoes are located. These are Gunung Batok (2,470m), Gunung Kursi (2,581m), Gunung Watangan (2,661m), and Gunung Widodaren (2,650m). However, of these mountains, Mount Bromo is the only one that is still active. The temperature at the top of Mount Bromo ranges from 5-18 degrees Celsius. In the southern part of the park, there is a steep plain divided by valleys and dotted with beautiful lakes until it reaches the foot of Mount Semeru.

The TNBTS is inhabited by the Tengger tribe. These people build houses with yards to grow local plants. Two villages within Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park are Ngadas Village and Ranu Pani Village. This Tengger tribe has settled in the Tengger mountain area in the 9th century AD. The Tengger tribe who lives in this national park lives by utilizing natural products from the Tengger mountains.

In addition to the residents of the two villages, around the border of the Bromo Semeru Tengger National Park also live the Tengger community in several districts. These districts are Malang Regency, Pasuruan Regency, Probolinggo Regency and Lumajang Regency. The ecosystem in this national park is still pristine because it is preserved by the indigenous people. Moreover, the government also manages it with a zoning system. Currently, Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park is also used for conservation, research, education and tourism.
