The Munduk Village: Bali’s Hidden Gem

Nestled on the slopes of North Bali’s mountains, the Munduk Village is a hidden gem that enchants with its authentic natural beauty. Surrounded by coffee plantations, tropical forests and stunning waterfalls, the village offers a tranquility that is hard to find in Bali’s more crowded tourist centers. The cool mountain air and verdant panoramas that stretch as far as the eye can see make Munduk an ideal place for anyone craving peace, adventure and a genuine cultural experience.

What Make Munduk Village Special

Munduk Village surprises with its relaxed and calm atmosphere. It’s very different from southern areas like Canggu and Seminyak. In Munduk, the population is mostly local, with only a few guesthouses to stay in and a few western-style restaurants.

The level of tourism in a place can often be seen by the number of bracelet stalls, clothing boutiques and bars present. In Munduk, however, there are no bracelet, clothing and bar stalls on the main street, reinforcing the authenticity of the area. One of the best things about Munduk is that there are still many areas that have yet to be visited.

Located on a mountainous plateau, Munduk offers beautiful views from almost every corner. From here, the beach town of Lovina can be seen in the distance, and sunsets can be enjoyed over the ocean. After spending so much time on the southern beaches, the change to a mountainous setting with a preserved natural landscape is a refreshing experience. Any place to eat or relax in Munduk always offers a stunning view.

Where to Stay in Munduk

Munduk has two main areas where visitors can stay. One option is to stay in the center of Munduk town, and the other is to stay near the Twin Lakes, Buyan and Tamblingan. Staying near the Lakes offers beautiful views and many small restaurants, including some western-style options. However, there are no small shops, banks, or petrol stations close by. This area is also very close to waterfalls and a temple, making it a convenient spot for sightseeing.

The town of Munduk itself is another great place to stay. It is a charming little town with stunning views, including a view of the ocean and Lovina below. In town, it is easier to find convenience stores, ATMs, petrol stations, and a variety of western restaurants.

Things To Do in Munduk

Chase Waterfalls

Munduk is a paradise for waterfall lovers. The area is full of beautiful waterfalls, many of which are peaceful and not crowded.

Here’s a list of waterfalls to visit:

  • Melanting Waterfall
  • Red Coral
  • Labuhan Kebo
  • Golden Valley
  • Banyumala Twin Waterfalls (the most famous)
  • Wanagiri Pucak Manik
  • Banyu Wana Amertha

It is hard to visit all of them in one day. It’s best to group them by location and spread the visits over a few days to fully enjoy the experience. Going early in the morning helps avoid crowds, especially at Banyumala Twin Waterfalls, which can get very busy. Most of the other waterfalls tend to be much quieter.

Explore Rice Terraces

Bali is famous for its stunning rice terraces, and Munduk is no exception. Visitors can enjoy the Munduk Rice Terrace by walking a beautiful loop that is about 2.4 miles long. For a more organized experience, tours are available starting at around $30 per person.

Ulun Danu Buyan Temple

Although not right in the center of Munduk Village, this temple is nearby and worth visiting. It is one of the most beautiful temples in Bali, featuring a floating temple on a lake. The gardens are very well maintained and lovely to explore. Visiting early in the day is a good idea to avoid the heat and crowds.

Handara Gate

Handara Gate is a famous photo spot often seen on social media. It is important to know that the gate is located at the entrance of a golf resort and is not part of a temple. Still, it is a great place to capture an iconic photo.

The Twin Lakes Viewpoint: Lake Tamblingan and Lake Buyan

When you arrive at the Twin Lakes Viewpoint in Munduk, get ready for a view you won’t forget. This spot offers a front-row seat to one of nature’s most stunning scenes – the wide stretch of Lake Buyan on one side and the calm waters of Lake Tamblingan on the other. Both lakes are surrounded by dense rainforest, adding deep green shades to the landscape. The viewpoint is perfectly positioned to give a full, uninterrupted view. It’s such a breathtaking panorama, it feels like you can see forever.

Visitors at the Twin Lakes Viewpoint often take their time to enjoy the scenery. It’s a peaceful spot where the cool highland breeze pairs perfectly with the beautiful surroundings. Photographers, both beginners and professionals, are often busy snapping photos, trying to capture the magic of the view. But beyond the cameras, it’s also a great place for quiet reflection. You can sit on one of the benches, watch the soft ripples on the lake’s surface, and let the beauty of Munduk’s twin lakes leave a lasting impression. For those who prefer to take in the moment without a lens, it’s an experience that stays with you long after you leave.

Strawberry Picking

Strawberry picking in Munduk is an experience that’s just as satisfying for the taste buds as it is for the soul. The village’s cooler temperatures create the ideal conditions for growing these sweet, red berries, which are a local specialty. Picture walking through rows of thriving plants, with the fresh mountain air filled with the scent of ripe strawberries ready to be picked. This hands-on activity isn’t just for berry lovers — it’s also a fun way to connect with nature and learn about sustainable farming practices.

Local farms often invite visitors to pick their own strawberries, with the bonus of either taking the harvest home or enjoying it fresh on the spot. For families, it’s a great chance to teach kids about where their food comes from, while couples often find it a charming and memorable way to spend time together. And the best part? You get to taste some of the juiciest strawberries Munduk has to offer, knowing they were picked by your own hands. Whether you eat them plain, drizzle them with a little honey, or blend them into a fresh fruit juice, the strawberries from Munduk are a delicious reminder of the region’s rich farming tradition.

Watch Sunset

Munduk Village is known for having some of the most beautiful sunsets in Bali, thanks to its high location where the clouds blend into colorful skies. Sunset can be enjoyed from many restaurants along the north side of the main road. A recommended spot is the Puri Lumbung Sunset Bar, located behind a group of cottages. The entrance is a bit hidden, up a wall with a small staircase. There is also a steep, narrow path for motorbikes for those who feel confident. The bar offers a happy hour with complimentary local snacks and the view is breathtaking.
